CANTON IN DANGER?

Chan Kwing-ming's Troops' Success.
REPORTED CAPTURE OF WAICHOW.
TOWARDS SHEKLUNG.
According to a reliable report received from Canton yesterday, a part of the former Chan Kwing- ming army with other nomad troops and some East River bandits captured Waichow city some days ago. General Ching-chien's army had left Waichow a few days pre- viously to assist the Kuomintang forces in Kiangsi and the only forces guarding the city were number of armed strike pickets.
A
Those commanding this band of mixed troops are said to be Generals Lau Chik-luk and Yeung Kwan-yui. They are stated to be advancing towards Sheklung. Should they reach this place checked it is considered likely that will endeavour to force their way through to Canton along the railway line.

Owing to Li Fuk-lum's troops having been sent to Kiangai and the Whampoa Cadets to Swatow the number of troops in Canton available to repel any attack from this determined force is somewhat small. A regiment has been with- drawn from Shuikwan by the
ment and has been sent to- Sheklung to check the ad- nce of the Chan troops. As it is the Government long ago lost control of large districts round Sheklung because of the few troops they have been able to send to en-
country.
Anti-Reds Active.
The same report states that on September 29 Shekki, the capital of the Heungshan district, was captured by 且 band of 3,000 bandits under Ngai Bong-ping. leader of the newly organised Anti- Red Alliance. It is thought pos- sible that he will attack Canton from the South. Attached to these troops of Ngai Bong-ping's are reported to be, several gunboata and armed launches.
Widespread Activity. Another report, dated October 2, states that according to news received from Heungshan, bandits there under Yuan Tai and Chan Wing-un, who are taking orders from General Ngai Bong-ping, made an attack on Shekki, capital of Heungshan, on September 28. As there were only one company (100 men) of troops defending the town the bandits succeeded in cap- turing it in the evening of the 29th. The district magistrate and other officers together with the Government troops retreated to Siulam. When the report reached Canton, the military authorities the 11th immediately ordered division in Kongmoon to suppress the uprising. The 58th regiment was despatched to Heungshan, to- gether with several gunboats of the local naval squadron,
It is reported that the bandits after taking Shekki have sent some of their men to Chinshan, on the Macao border, and driven the garrisons therefrom.
Their main force is advancing on Siulam, of the Shuntak district, which is very near Kongmoon. Their plan apparently is to join the bandits in Shuntak, and then start an attack on Kongmoon.
Bandit gangs under Yuan Ha- kau and Pai Sau-chung, together with former troops of Chan Kwing- ming, under the direction of Yuen Kwan-yu and Lau Chi-lok, are at present very active on the East River. Chan Kwing-ming is re- ported to have formally assumed his office as Commander-in-Chief of the Anti-Red Cantonese Army. The Government is despatching troops to have
these forces sup- pressed.
